How to create a 1980s AI portrait

Creating a convincing 1980s portrait from a modern photo takes about two minutes if you prepare the reference image properly. This guide covers the full workflow: choosing a photo, deciding on a direction, running the generation, and reviewing the result before you save it.

1. Choose a clear portrait

Start with a single person, front-facing, evenly lit and reasonably sharp. Avoid group photos, heavy backlighting, sunglasses and strong shadows across the face, because those confuse identity preservation. A phone photo taken near a window usually works better than a low-light indoor shot. Only upload a photo of someone else if you have their permission.

2. Decide the era direction

Nineteen-eighties portraits are not one look. Pick a direction before you generate:

Studio portrait uses a mottled painted backdrop and direct flash. Yearbook is a head-and-shoulders school portrait on a plain blue background. Street film is a candid outdoor snapshot with natural light and visible grain. Neon arcade leans into saturated pink and cyan lighting. Shopping mall and prom night are the two most nostalgic flash-photography looks.

3. Add your own instructions (optional)

The custom prompt box lets you describe wardrobe, mood or framing in your own words. Keep it short and visual. Phrases like "satin blazer", "faded colour", "subtle grain" and "head-and-shoulders framing" work well; technical camera jargon usually does not change the result.

4. Generate and review

After you confirm the photo-processing consent, generate the image. Review it in this order: eyes, hairline, hands, wardrobe, background, then overall colour. If the face is wrong, the reference photo is almost always the cause, so fix the input before changing the prompt.

5. Save and share

Once the result looks right, download the image and keep a copy of the original photo. If you plan to post it, remember that AI imagery is a creative interpretation, not historical photography, and label it as AI-generated where that matters.

Allowances and limits

Guest mode allows up to three successful images per browser per UTC day. A request that times out with an unknown outcome keeps its slot reserved until the next UTC day to prevent duplicate use, so do not click Generate repeatedly.
